Steve Bannon has thrown his full support to embattled Republican Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore as the former White House chief strategist will join Moore on the campaign trail next week ahead of the December 12 special election.
Bannon who has returned to Breitbart News since his departure from the White House will appear alongside Moore at a rally in Fairhope, Ala., on December 5.
In a media interview, Bannon said of the beleaguered Moore: “I look forward to standing with Judge Moore and all of the Alabama deplorables in the fight to elect him to the United States Senate and send shockwaves to the political and media elites.”
Bannon is being viewed as engaging in a self-declared “war”’ against the GOP establishment since being asked to leave the Trump administration by backing populist candidates instead of the safer institutional favorites.
Bannon has been supporting Moore since the primary, choosing him over President Trump’s personal choice , incumbent Sen. Luther Strange.
Many in the Republican party has parted ways with Moore and refused to support him in the wake of several women hurling accusations against the candidate of inappropriate sexual behavior toward them when they were still in their teens and Moore was in his 30s. Some Republicans who prior to the controversy have given their endorsement to Moore have since withdrawn such expression of support.
Recent polling in the red state of Alabama indicate it would be a close contest. Trump has reiterated his non-support for Moore when he announced on Monday that he will not campaign for him.
The President, however, did not mince words in slamming Moore’s opponent , Democratic challenger Doug Jones. He took to Twitter to say: “The last thing we need in Alabama and the U.S. Senate is a Schumer/Pelosi puppet who is WEAK on crime, WEAK on the Border, Bad for our Military and our great Vets, Bad for our 2nd Amendment, AND WANTS TO RAISES TAXES TO THE SKY. Jones would be a disaster!”
