Doctors Removed 263 Coins, 100 Nails From Man's Stomach

India – The operation was performed at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Satna, Madhya Pradesh, India. The hospital is located about 250 miles southeast of New Delhi.

The surgeon was examining a man complaining of abdominal pain. The surgeon initially suspected food poisoning.

Maksud Khan (35) was hospitalized with a stomachache and performed an endoscopic examination to investigate the cause.

"The patient was complaining of stomach pain, so we thought of getting an endoscopy done," Dr. Priyank Sharma, the lead surgeon, said. "We were shocked to discover that coins, nails, and nut-bolts in his stomach. We come across such a case for the first in our career."

"This man looks mentally unstable as no sane person would do something like this," he said.

According to the doctor, Kahn worked as a driver of a tricycle and often swallowed coins given by customers.

He had been complaining of stomach pains for three months.

Relatives said he might be depressed and may have been obsessed by eating metal objects.

"Whenever he felt the urge to ingest a coin, he ingested it with water," said a family member.

Amazingly, the coins and nails never caused any pain or problem initially.

"The operation was done in the nick of the time as some of the nails lodged had pierced his stomach, caused bleeding and resulting in loss of hemoglobin," said another doctor who operated on Khan.

This is so-called "Pica (disorder)", which is characterized by an appetite for substances that are largely non-nutritive, such as ice, hair, paper, drywall or paint, metal, stones, or soil, glass, or feces, and chalk.
