Nel-Peters is 22-years-old and not just a beautiful face, she is also a business management graduate and she beat out 91 other candidates at the Las Vegas finals. The last time a South African won the contest was 1978 and with the title Miss Universe Nel-Peters received a $250,000 pear-encrusted Mikimoto crown.
She was once robbed at gunpoint after winning Miss South Africa and has learned martial arts since which she also teaches to other woman. She also advocated for the gender pay gap when asked what the biggest problem women face today in the workplace saying, "In some places, women get paid 75 percent of what men earn for doing the same job and working the same hours and I do not believe that that is right."
The event was hosted by American comic turned TV host Steve Harvey who had previously lead the even twice before. He is mostly known for his 2015 mishap where he announced the wrong Miss Universe causing an extremely uncomfortable, tense correction and a host of internet memes.
