The accident closed all westbound traffic on the interstate for hours diverting all traffic to El Portal Drive in the interim. The identities of the crash victim's have not been released and it is unclear if alcohol was involved in the collision.

The California Highway Patrol confirmed five cars were involved in the collision and one of them tried to flee the scene but was apprehended later that night after a three-hour search.

Officer Matthew Hamer, a CHP spokesman, described the collision saying, "It's a very complex collision. It’s being investigated as a five-vehicle hit-and-run collision."

In addition to the closure of all the Westbound lanes, one of the Eastbound lanes were also closed due to debris and it is unknown when they will be reopened. The six who were hospitalized for injuries included a juvenile but the exact condition of the victims is not yet available.
