Authorities with Waller County said shots were fired, but did not specify who opened fire. Hours later, there were reports that Black was spotted in neighboring Waller County and engaged in a shootout with officers there.

Authorities from multiple agencies joined forces and were able to successfully put an end to the brief standoff, subduing the suspect and placing him under arrest.

Jail records show that Black has previously been booked into the Smith County jail in Tyler on September 7, 2017, on charges of evading arrest, aggravated assault of a public servant and reckless driving.

Governor Greg Abbot released a statement on Thursday evening condoling with the family, colleagues, and friends of the trooper who he said was “callously killed today in the line of duty.”
