Two gay women in Oklahoma were sentenced to 20 years in jail Friday for beating a 5-year-old boy to death with a hammer. Rachel Stevens, 29, and her girlfriend Kayla Jones, 26 were both sentenced Friday on felony charges of child abuse by injury and child neglect.
The victim was Steven's own 5-year-old son who suffered two strokes as a result of being beaten with a hammer. The pair pleaded no contest and received the 20 years as a result of a plea deal agreement. According to police records, the 5-year-old victim was locked in a room, bound with duct tape covering his eyes but the case wasn't brought to their attention until doctors at a hospital he was taken to reported his shocking condition to police.
The boy told police that his mother beat him with a belt and the police say that's not all she did. Stevens hit her son's hand with a hammer and her girlfriend "kicked him so hard in the groin that it made him bleed." The boy's condition was so severe he was taken to a hospital where doctors discovered several more broken bones and found he was malnourished.
Two other children lived in the home with the sick women but investigators saw no sign they were abused. Both children were still taken into custody of the Department of Human Services. As part of the plea agreement, the Muskogee County District Attorney stipulated that neither woman is allowed to see the boy during their sentence.
The district attorney gave a statement saying, "It was a conclusion that was carefully discussed with the family. The nature of the injuries were very severe, but the child is doing very well now in a loving home. He is a completely different child now than when this (case) first came in. He received the most wonderful care and is in a great home right now, and I feel confident that he is going to be OK."
