A group of nearly two dozen children was injured when a stairwell collapsed at an indoor gym in San Diego Saturday night. The freak accident occurred in Barrio Logan neighborhood around 7:40 p.m. at Vault PK which is located near Main street.
The victim's were attending a birthday party at the gym which specializes in parkour, a specialized sport that requires athletes to navigate military-style obstacle courses. Twenty-one children and two adults were taken to Rady Children’s Hospital, Scripps Mercy, Sharp and UC San Diego Medical Center with injuries ranging from moderate to minor.
San Diego Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Steve Wright indicted three or four victims suffered spinal injuries when a 10' by 30' wood platform collapsed on them. Zachary Smith was at the birthday party held in honor of his son and he was standing on the platform when it collapsed with around 30 other people on it. Mr. Smith and his son were both on the platform when it fell, the elder fell onto a young girl but miraculously neither were seriously hurt.
Mr. Smith described what happened saying, "It was a freak accident" and describing how the structure didn't look capable of supporting that much weight. He also described the chaos after the collapse as parents scrambled to find their children in the debris. Another parent who was at the party said the platform collapsed after many children were running up and down to get pizza.
There were around 100 to 150 kids at the gym which has trampolines and bouncy houses amid the course. The street outside was soon lined with several ambulances and firetrucks taking victims to the hospital. An investigation is underway into the cause of the collapse.
