Manager of «Kaspersky Lab» Placed Behind Bars On Charges of Treason

Ruslan Stoyanov of Kaspersky Lab has been arrested for treason, according to Kommersant reports. Mr. Stoyanov was the head of the cyber crime division at Kaspersky Lab. He now resides in Lefortovo Prison in Moscow. He has been incarcerated since early December 2016.The public relation department of Kaspersky Lab has confirmed the arrest, and stated that the investigation had nothing to do with the company; that it was a matter of a private individual. This is apparently related to the arrest of Sergei Mikhailov, director of information security at the Federal Security Service, or FSB, in Russia. Apparently Mr. Mikhailov received money from a foreign corporation, with Mr. Stoyanov as an intermediary.

Mr. Mikhailov is an important man who is considered to be informally influencing the entire information security and e-commerce sector in Russia. Both Mr. Stoyanov and Mr. Mikhailov have been inactive on social media since early December 2016. Mr. Stoyanov was last active on December 4 and Mr. Mikhailov on December 5.

The FSB has declined to comment. However ,there is no official source about the investigiation.

According to Andrei Soldatov of Agentura.ru, Kaspersky Lab needs to distance itself from law enforcement agencies and build a more formal relationship with the FSB. He also says that the FSB will continue to work with Kaspersky Lab in cybercrime investigations because there is nowhere else to go and that Kaspersky Lab has the best experts.
