Joseph Felix was sentenced to 10 years in prison after abusing young recruits including three Muslims, one of which killed himself.
A jury of eight deliberated at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina Friday and ultimately decided to also strip Gunnery Sgt. Joseph Felix of his rank, all pay, and handed him a dishonorable discharge.
Felix would call the Muslim recruits names, beat them and even put one inside a clothes dryer and turned it on. The recruit killed himself shortly after and his body was found to be covered in bruises. The jury of five Sargents convicted the instructor Thursday of maltreatment of recruits at the Marine Corps' Parris Island, South Carolina, boot camp.
The former Iraq veteran Felix is 34-years-old and the military jury of his peers found him guilty of punching, kicking and chocking recruits, especially the three Muslim military volunteers he called "terrorists".
prosecutor Lt. Col. John Norman said Wednesday, "He wasn't making Marines. He was breaking Marines." Felix was just one of six drill instructors who were at the South Carolina camp and was also charged with abuse after the suicide of the Muslim volunteer.
