“You never really think it's going to happen until it happens,” said Rodolfo Trujillo, whose girlfriend is a teller at the bank.

As other officers in the area were responding to the incident, they were told that a vehicle in the area “was either the source of shots fired or received shots fired,” according to the city’s statement.

According to those same officers, they then found another victim who was shot by the gunman who was stealing his car to get away from the scene of the robbery.

Police then gave chase to the bank robber, and he began to fire at the officers involved in the chase.

“Preliminary, shots were fired, striking the suspect,” according to the statement. “The suspect has since died. Additional victims have been injured in this incident.”

After the exchange of bullets the suspect then crashed on Jake Alexander Boulevard, to which responding officers found him deceased in the vehicle.

The city has not said how many additional victims were involved, their current conditions and where they were hurt.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) are assisting Salisbury Police with the ongoing investigation of the bank robbery, the shooting of the suspect by police “and other possible crimes committed by the suspect,” the city said.
