A mother and father have been arrested in LaPorte, Indiana and their child was taken away after it was discovered the two were father and daughter. Jolly Standifer, 53, and his daughter Nichole Murphy, 35, were living together as a couple and police say their child was born of incest.
The pair was arrested Tuesday night after police in LaPorte served a search warrant at their home. Captain Bill Degnegaard of LaPorte police said, "When they arrived they ended up having to force their way in a little bit, made contact with the subjects, took them into custody and while in the process they located some drugs."
Over a half pound of marijuana was found at the home by the County Drug Task Force along with dirt and drying stations used to run a grow operation. The two may also face charges for dealing the marijuana and neighbors say they avoided the house due to the smell. The only charges filed at this point against Standifer and Murphy are for incest and their neighbors were shocked saying they seemed like a normal married couple.
Captain Degnegaard went on to say, "This is actually a rare case. You don't see a lot of this. This is actually my first that I've seen. I mean I'm sure it happens, more than we know and we're just not notified about it but yeah this is a new one for me even."
Murphy and Standifer face up to eight years in prison if convicted of the incest charges. Their daughter is in the process of being placed in a safe home but it would take a few weeks to find one.
