The Department of Corrections has come under scrutiny after a 13-year-old was raped at the Angola prison in Angola, Louisiana by an inmate at the prison named Laderrick Davis. The incident occurred when a 13-year-old girl was seen leaving a bathroom with a male inmate. The girl was questioned and revealed they had sex since the law doesn't allow for a 13-year-old to consent the incident is being investigated as a rape.
State prison spokesperson Ken Pastorick responded in an email after a news piece about the rape aired on local television. In the statement, Pastorick confirmed the investigation saying, "There is an ongoing investigation into an alleged incident which may have occurred during the last weekend of the October 2017 rodeo. The details of the alleged incident will not be released or discussed until the appropriate time."
Days after the incident, Davis was transferred out of State Penitentiary to Wade Correctional in Homer in an unusual move. The inmate being investigated is serving a life sentence for murder. West Feliciana Parish Sheriff Austin Daniel confirmed they also are investigating the incident. The fact that an inmate was able to have sex with a child inside the prison is not the only problem with the prison, hundreds of contraband items from tobacco to marijuana cash and pills are all confiscated during "shakedowns".
Pastorick also commented on the issue of stemming the flow of contraband, "The [Department of Corrections] has spent more than $200,000 dollars on equipment to help combat contraband, and it has made a difference." When pressed for further details on how the rape had happened, Pastorick only said the state would "be willing to provide details of the investigation once it is completed."
