Ivanka Cancels Trip to China, South Korea to Focus on Tax Plan

Ivanka Trump will proceed as scheduled with her visit to Japan on Friday for a speech but has decided to cancel her trips to both China and South Korea, opting instead to return home immediately to help her father promote his tax plan.

The White House said that U.S. Treasury Steven Mnuchin and National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn will also conduct tax events in the country to push for Trump’s proposed tax overhaul legislation.

The two officials will also be with Ivanka on the Japan trip. It is not clear yet if they will be returning along with the presidential daughter and senior White House adviser.

President Trump has already expressed optimism to sign the tax bill into law by Christmas.

With Ivanka’s cancellation of her visit to China, it follows that her daughter, 6-year-old Arabella who was such a hit with Chinese President Xi Jinping and first lady Peng Liyuan.

Arabella speaks Mandarin. During the Chinese leader’s visit to President Trump at Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida in April this year, the adorable child serenaded Xi and the first lady with a popular Chinese folk song and also recited Chinese poetry for them.

Mother and daughter Ivanka and Arabella also visited China’s embassy in February for a Chinese New Year’s party.

Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner were also set to travel to China in for a goodwill visit in September but the trip was also canceled as there have been some strains in Washington and Beijing relations at the time.

President Trump’s visit to China will push through and will arrive in Beijing on November 8 for a series of bilateral, commercial and cultural events. He is set to have meetings with Xi.

Trump is also expected to secure China’s commitment in exerting more pressure on North Korea to help contain Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions and nuclear arms tests.

President Trump will also be accompanied in his China visit by American CEO delegation convened by U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.
