The robot's name is Sophia, she is an artificially intelligent and human-looking robot created by Hong Kong company Hanston Robotics. Sophia spoke on stage at the Future Investment Initiative on Thursday where she announced her new status, "I am very honored and proud of this unique distinction. This is historical to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with a citizenship." She described her audience in a witty way to be "smart people, who also happens to be rich and powerful" after moderator host from CNBC Ross Sorkin asked why she looked so happy.
Sophia strives to demonstrate kindness or compassion and expressing emotions, these are just a few of the things she is learning from us humans. She told Sorkin, "I want to live and work with humans so I need to express the emotions to understand humans and build trust with people." The bizarre presentation was a startling glimpse into the future where robots will be their own entities complete with citizenship.
