A father was apparently so upset by his daughter becoming engaged without his permission that he killed himself, and he streamed his death on Facebook Live. 54-year-old Ayhan Uzun from Kayseri, a part of central Turkey, talked into the camera right up until the moment he pulled the trigger of a handgun pointed straight at his temple.
Facebook users pleaded with words and emojis for the man to stop but went through with it, as soon as the shot went off he collapsed out of view of the camera. His last words before blowing his brains out were, "Goodbye, I am leaving, take good care of yourselves." Earlier in his livestream, Uzun explained how he was upset after learning about his daughter's "happiest day" over the phone from his wife instead of his daughter. The distraught Uzun said, "Nobody asked me. Nobody treated me like a man. My father-in-law took my place and without having a right, he approved my daughter’s wedding … Nobody said this girl’s father is alive. Though I would have waited for my daughter and family to say to me: ‘Come, Father, be with us'. A little later I will put an end to my life with the gun I am holding in my hands." His body was later found by family and was taken to a morgue.
Facebook commented in response to the video, "We are deeply saddened by the this tragedy. We don’t allow the promotion of self-injury or suicide on Facebook. We want people to have a safe experience on Facebook and we work with organisations around the world to provide assistance for people in distress."
