To combat a disproportionate STD rate in mostly African-American neighborhoods, the ST. Louis Health Department has armed barber shop workers in the area with knowledge.
Several barber and stylists shops in the area have been trained on how to bring up the topic of safe sex while cutting peoples hair. The program is called Fade Out and equips workers to bring up the sensitive topic while people are in a relaxed atmosphere.
More than a dozen of the shops in the area have been trained, it will take some time to see how effective the program is but almost certainly help the rising STD rates in the area.
